Many thanks to my colleague Joseph Sirven, MD, for sharing his research on social determinants of health in epilepsy during this Medscape interview. Dr. Sirven, Professor of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, FL, gave a synopsis of his presentation at the Wake Forest Symposium at the recent American Epilepsy Society meeting in Nashville, TN.

Dr. Sirven and colleagues examined the Arizona Medicaid database to determine which newly diagnosed epilepsy patients were more or less likely to receive prompt administration of antiseizure drugs. They observed that social determinants of health, like whether or not the patient was employed, played a significant role.
