Many thanks to Dr. Sarah Smith for the opportunity to speak about locum tenens on her podcast Sustainable Clinical Medicine. I told stories about my locums experiences (dating back to 1982!) and provided actionable recommendations for those starting out with locums. Of course, my book, "The Locum Life: A Physician's Guide to Locum Tenens," is a good place to start!

While there are many worthwhile nonclinical jobs out there, "burned out" doctors should consider locum tenens before bailing out of clinical medicine. It's difficult to find another profession where one can help fellow human beings so directly and immediately. Physicians can always provide compassion if not a cure.

Locum tenens offers independence and flexibility, two attributes often missing with conventional physician employment. Please click on the link below to hear more!
