    How COVID-19 Attacks the Body

Please check out this detailed Medscape interview with Dr. Maureen Czick based on her recent scientific publication about the role of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in COVID-19. It's a thought-provoking and stimulating paper. The article has received excellent feedback so far. Writer Alfred Alcorn speaks about his books and pandemics

Here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmkI9sYryaQ&t=16s Many thanks to writer Alfie Alcorn for doing this terrific interview on The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner! Mr. Alcorn wrote a prescient novel, "Sugar Mountain," about a devastating pandemic, published in 2013, long before anyone had heard of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19. Before devoting himself to writing full-time, Mr. Alcorn graduated from Harvard University and worked as a journalist, teacher, and trave

    Multiple Sclerosis and COVID-19

In addition to the various neurologic effects of COVID-19 that we are still striving to understand, there is the question of the virus' impact on people who already have a neurologic disorder such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or multiple sclerosis (MS). I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Stephen Krieger on the effects of SARS-CoV-2 on people with MS for ReachMD.com. Dr. Krieger is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the Corinne Goldsmith Dickinson Center for Multiple S

    Coronavirus in the Brain?

I was asked to comment for a Medscape article regarding a recent report of 3 patients with COVID-19 and encephalitis. One of the patients died. Luckily, COVID-19 associated encephalitis seems rare given that millions of people have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 worldwide and reports of encephalitis are few. Whether COVID-19 encephalitis is a direct or indirect effect of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is not yet clear. Many neurologic complications have been described in COVID-19+ pati

    COVID-19 and the Nervous System

My long-time editor, Bret Stetka, MD, at Medscape.com, asked me to write about the effects of COVID-19 on the nervous system. There have been many recent reports of neurological symptoms associated with COVID-19, but the critical question remains whether the virus directly targets neurons or whether neurological symptoms result from indirect injury. Rabies virus, for example, directly infects the nervous system with 100% mortality. If SARS-CoV-2 does attack the brain directly
